Jaw pain treatment in Eindhoven
Pain around your jaw or ear, clicking when you chew, waking up with a tense face: TMJ complaints are common and very treatable.

In short
- Jaw pain often feels like ear pain, the joint sits directly in front of the ear
- Stress and unconscious clenching are the biggest drivers
- The neck almost always plays a role and is treated along
- Most patients improve clearly within a few sessions
How do you recognise TMJ complaints (TMD)?
TMD, temporomandibular dysfunction, covers complaints of the jaw joint and chewing muscles. The signs are wider than most people expect:
- Pain in front of the ear, in the cheek or along the jawline, often mistaken for ear problems
- A clicking or popping jaw when opening wide, yawning or chewing
- A jaw that feels tired or tense in the morning, a sign of night-time grinding
- Limited mouth opening, or a jaw that occasionally locks
- Headaches at the temples, especially after concentrated work
- Pain when chewing tough food, and sometimes tooth pain without dental cause
Stress, clenching and the neck connection
The chewing muscles are among the strongest in your body, built for chewing minutes per day, not for being clenched hours on end. Yet that is exactly what concentrated screen work and stress produce: unconscious clenching, all day or at night, which overloads muscles and joint just like any other overtrained body part.
- Stress and high mental load: deadlines, a new job, moving to a new country
- Grinding and clenching at night (bruxism), often noticed first by a partner or dentist
- Concentration habits: jaw clamped while coding, gaming or lifting weights
- Neck problems, which share nerves and muscles with the jaw region
- The disc in the jaw joint moving out of rhythm, which causes the clicking
Jaw and neck are one functional unit: research and practice both show that treating the neck alongside the jaw clearly improves TMD results. That is why we always examine both.
How long do jaw complaints take to recover?
TMD responds fast compared to many complaints: most patients notice a clear difference within three to five sessions, especially with muscle-driven pain. Habit change, catching the clenching during your workday, takes a few weeks of practice. Clicking may not disappear entirely, a painless click is harmless, but pain, tension and limited opening are very treatable.
What can you do yourself?
- Check yourself during work: lips together, teeth apart, tongue relaxed, teeth should only touch when chewing
- Put a small note or screen reminder for the first weeks: 'jaw loose?'
- Temporarily avoid extreme chewing: tough steak, whole apples, chewing gum marathons
- Warmth on the cheek muscles relaxes them, a warm washcloth works fine
- Do not force a clicking jaw open and closed to 'test' it, that irritates the joint
How we treat jaw complaints in Eindhoven
Our jaw physiotherapist examines the jaw joint, chewing muscles, mouth opening and neck, and maps when your complaints occur: at night, while concentrating, while eating. The plan combines:
- Hands-on treatment of the chewing muscles, outside and, where useful, inside the cheek, always with gloves and always explained first
- Mobilisation of the jaw joint for limited opening or a disc that catches
- Treatment of the neck, which almost always contributes
- Habit reversal training: learning to catch and break the clenching pattern
- Coordination and relaxation exercises for jaw and tongue
- Coordination with your dentist when a night guard (bite splint) would support the result

When should you see a GP or dentist first?
- A jaw locked completely open or closed after a trauma: emergency care
- Jaw pain with fever and swelling (possible infection): doctor or dentist the same day
- Tooth pain with heat/cold sensitivity: dentist first, that is dental
- New jaw pain with chest pain or pressure during exertion: call emergency services
For all other jaw complaints you can book directly with us, no referral from dentist or GP needed.
