What is hand therapy?
Your hands are involved in almost everything you do, so hand and wrist complaints quickly affect work, sport and daily life. We treat RSI-type complaints from desk work, sprains, tendon problems such as De Quervain and trigger finger, thumb osteoarthritis and recovery after a fracture or surgery. Our specialised hand therapist combines precise assessment with a practical, goal-driven plan.
Who is it for?
- Wrist or forearm pain from keyboard and mouse work
- Recovery after a wrist or hand fracture
- Thumb base osteoarthritis and grip problems
- Climbers, racket sport players and gym athletes with hand injuries

For which complaints do we use hand therapy?
Desk work & RSI
- Aching wrists and forearms that build during the day.
- Mouse-arm complaints.
- Tingling that appears while typing.
Tendons & nerves
- De Quervain at the thumb side.
- Trigger finger that clicks or locks.
- Carpal tunnel syndrome with night tingling.
After a fall or fracture
- Stiffness after plaster or surgery.
- Persistent pain at the thumb side after a fall.
- Rebuilding grip strength and confidence.
Thumb & osteoarthritis
- Pain at the thumb base with pinching.
- Opening jars becomes the daily test.
- Keeping hobbies possible with joint protection.

When to book hand therapy?
Wondering whether it is 'bad enough' for the physio? In these situations an appointment is worthwhile, no referral needed:
- Persistent pain or stiffness: that does not clearly improve after one to two weeks of taking it easy (walking, moving, short breaks).
- Recurring complaints: with work or sport, for example neck pain after screen days, a shoulder that protests when reaching, or a calf that keeps seizing up when running.
- Restricted movement: something that used to work no longer does: reaching overhead, bending, turning, stairs.
- Recovery after an injury or surgery: you want to rebuild strength and load capacity safely and prevent a relapse.
How hand therapy works
We start with a short intake about your complaints and goals, in plain English. We look at your load and recovery (work, sport, sleep, stress), test which movements provoke your complaint, and decide together whether this treatment adds value for you. You get a clear explanation and a concrete plan for the first weeks, and treatment starts the same appointment.
Desk work, RSI and your wrists
A large share of our international patients work full days at a keyboard, at the High Tech Campus, at home or in one of Eindhoven's co-working spaces. Wrist and forearm pain from repetitive strain is one of the most common complaints we treat.
Alongside treatment we look at your workstation, typing posture and micro-breaks. Small changes in setup and habits often make the difference between a complaint that keeps returning and one that stays away.
Recovery you can measure
Because we measure grip and pinch strength with a dynamometer at every stage, your recovery is visible in numbers, not impressions. After a fracture, patients typically regain most daily function within two to three months of guided rehabilitation.
For work-related complaints, the combination of treatment plus workstation changes is what makes results stick: the pain settles within weeks, and the setup changes keep it from being refuelled every working day.

Costs and insurance
Physiotherapy is covered by your supplementary (aanvullende) insurance, depending on your policy, and it never touches your deductible (eigen risico). Many expat and international insurance plans cover physiotherapy as well. Bring your insurance details to the first appointment and we check your coverage together, before any costs surprise you. For complex hand cases we work with certified hand therapists (CHT) in the region, and we arrange that route with you when it is the better option.
Adults (18+)
- Sessions are reimbursed from your supplementary (aanvullende) insurance, the number depends on your policy.
- For chronic conditions on the official list, the basic insurance covers from session 21 onwards (sessions 1–20 via supplementary insurance or self-paid); a doctor's referral is required for chronic status.
- Physiotherapy never counts towards your deductible (eigen risico), except basic-insurance COPD care.
Children up to 17
- With a chronic indication, physiotherapy is covered from the very first session by the basic insurance.
Preparation and aftercare
What to bring
- ID (first appointment) and your insurance details
- Clothes you can move in, think shorts or sports gear for hip and knee complaints
- A short history of your complaint: when it started, what worsens it, what eases it
- Any medical information: referral letter, scans or earlier reports, if you have them
- No special preparation needed, a water bottle is always a good idea
After the treatment
- Splints and tape are temporary tools, we build down as strength returns
- Do the tendon gliding and strength exercises daily, hands recover on frequency
- Adjust your workstation as advised, otherwise the working day undoes the progress
- Mild soreness after hand training is normal, sharp or radiating pain is a signal
