What is ultrasound imaging?
With musculoskeletal ultrasound we look directly at your muscles, tendons and ligaments during your appointment. It is safe, painless and gives immediate answers: is it a tendon inflammation, a bursitis or a tear? Combined with a physical examination this leads to a precise diagnosis and a targeted treatment plan, without waiting for a hospital appointment.
Who is it for?
- Shoulder pain that is not improving
- Suspected tendon problems: Achilles, hamstring, elbow
- Swelling or fluid in a joint after an injury
- Anyone who wants clarity before starting treatment

For which complaints do we use ultrasound imaging?
Shoulder
- Rotator cuff tendon problems and tears.
- Bursitis and calcifications.
- Unexplained shoulder pain that is not improving.
Achilles & calf
- Achilles tendon thickening and pain.
- Calf muscle tears after sprinting.
- Monitoring tendon recovery during rehab.
Knee & hamstring
- Jumper's knee (patellar tendon).
- Hamstring strains and their healing.
- Fluid in the knee after a twist.
Elbow & wrist
- Tennis elbow tendon changes.
- De Quervain at the thumb side of the wrist.
- Swelling after a fall on the hand.

When to book ultrasound imaging?
Wondering whether it is 'bad enough' for the physio? In these situations an appointment is worthwhile, no referral needed:
- Pain that is not improving: after weeks of trying, and you want to know what is actually going on before treating further.
- A suspected tear: sudden loss of strength or a 'snap' during sport deserves a look inside.
- Recurring tendon problems: the image often explains why a complaint keeps returning.
- A hospital scan feels like a detour: no referral, no waiting list, answers in one visit.
Your ultrasound appointment step by step
We start with a short intake about your complaints and goals, in plain English. We look at your load and recovery (work, sport, sleep, stress), test which movements provoke your complaint, and decide together whether this treatment adds value for you. You get a clear explanation and a concrete plan for the first weeks, and treatment starts the same appointment.
What can we see on an ultrasound scan?
Ultrasound is excellent for soft tissue: tendon inflammation and tears, calcifications in the shoulder, bursitis, muscle tears and fluid in a joint. We scan shoulders most often, followed by Achilles tendons, knees, elbows and hamstrings.
Some problems, like cartilage damage or bone injuries, need different imaging. If we see a reason for that, we tell you straight away and advise you on the right route through the Dutch healthcare system.
Why imaging in-house matters
The Dutch route to a hospital scan runs via GP, referral, radiology appointment and a letter back, easily weeks in which your treatment waits on a question mark. In-house ultrasound collapses that into one appointment: examination, scan, diagnosis and plan in 25 minutes.
It also makes your recovery visible: we can re-scan a healing muscle tear or calming bursa and show you the progress, which beats guessing every time.

Costs and insurance
The ultrasound examination is part of a regular physiotherapy session, no separate or hidden costs. Physiotherapy is covered by your supplementary (aanvullende) insurance, depending on your policy, and it never touches your deductible (eigen risico). Many expat and international insurance plans cover physiotherapy as well. Bring your insurance details to the first appointment and we check your coverage together, before any costs surprise you.
Adults (18+)
- Sessions are reimbursed from your supplementary (aanvullende) insurance, the number depends on your policy.
- For chronic conditions on the official list, the basic insurance covers from session 21 onwards (sessions 1–20 via supplementary insurance or self-paid); a doctor's referral is required for chronic status.
- Physiotherapy never counts towards your deductible (eigen risico), except basic-insurance COPD care.
Children up to 17
- With a chronic indication, physiotherapy is covered from the very first session by the basic insurance.
Preparation and aftercare
What to bring
- ID (first appointment) and your insurance details
- Clothes you can move in, think shorts or sports gear for hip and knee complaints
- A short history of your complaint: when it started, what worsens it, what eases it
- Any medical information: referral letter, scans or earlier reports, if you have them
- No special preparation needed, a water bottle is always a good idea
After the treatment
- There is nothing to recover from: the scan is painless and has no after-effects
- You get the findings explained immediately and, on request, a written summary
- The treatment plan starts the same visit, no waiting for a letter
- Follow-up scans during rehabilitation are simply part of your sessions
