Shoulder pain treatment in Eindhoven
Shoulder pain when lifting your arm, sleeping on your side or reaching overhead: we diagnose it precisely, with in-house ultrasound imaging when needed.

In short
- The shoulder is the most mobile joint in your body, and precise diagnosis decides the treatment
- In-house ultrasound imaging: see your tendons and bursa during the appointment
- Frozen shoulder treatment: guided through every phase
- Night pain when lying on the shoulder is typical for bursa and tendon problems
How do you recognise what your shoulder pain is?
Shoulder pain has many faces, and each pattern points to a different structure:
- A painful arc when lifting the arm sideways, fine below and above it: typically subacromial pain (tendons or bursa under the shoulder roof)
- Night pain when lying on the shoulder: characteristic for bursitis and rotator cuff tendon problems
- Rapidly increasing stiffness in every direction, reaching your back pocket becomes impossible: the pattern of a frozen shoulder
- Sudden loss of strength after a fall or forceful movement: a possible rotator cuff tear
- Pain on top of the shoulder near the collarbone after a fall on the shoulder: the AC joint
- Shoulder pain with tingling towards the arm: possibly referred from the neck rather than the shoulder itself
Common causes: from desk posture to overhead sport
Most shoulder pain is a capacity problem: the tendons of the rotator cuff, the muscle group that steers your shoulder, get more load than they are trained for. That happens at both ends of the activity spectrum.
- Desk work with rounded shoulders, which narrows the space under the shoulder roof
- A sudden increase in overhead load: painting the new apartment, starting bouldering, a padel season
- Age-related tendon changes, normal from 40 onwards, which lower the tendon's tolerance
- A fall onto the shoulder or outstretched arm
- Diabetes and thyroid conditions, which raise the risk of a frozen shoulder specifically
Because so many structures can be involved, we use in-house ultrasound imaging: you see your own tendons and bursa on the screen during the appointment, no hospital referral, no weeks of waiting.
How long does shoulder recovery take?
Subacromial pain and bursitis usually improve clearly within six to twelve weeks of progressive training. Rotator cuff tendon problems follow the same route but ask more patience. A frozen shoulder has its own timeline: the full course can take a year or longer, but guided treatment shortens the painful phase and protects your function along the way.
The trap with shoulder pain is resting it into weakness: an unloaded tendon loses capacity, which makes the pain return faster on every attempt. Progressive, measured loading is the evidence-based way out, and exactly what we coach.
What can you do yourself?
- Keep using the arm for daily activities within tolerable pain; total rest weakens the tendons
- Temporarily avoid the clearly provoking peak: the highest shelf, heavy overhead pressing
- For night pain: sleep on the other side with a pillow supporting the painful arm
- Check your desk: sit tall, screen at eye height, elbows supported
- Build activity back up gradually, adding load in small weekly steps
How we treat shoulder pain in Eindhoven
Everything starts with the right diagnosis. Movement and strength tests, and where useful an ultrasound scan on the spot, establish which structure drives your pain. From there:
- A progressive strength programme for the rotator cuff and shoulder blade muscles, the core of every evidence-based shoulder treatment
- Manual therapy for the shoulder joint, shoulder blade and neck, which frequently contributes
- For a frozen shoulder: phase-appropriate mobilisation and exercises, with honest coaching about the timeline
- Medical taping to unload the shoulder in sport or work during recovery
- A return-to-sport build-up for overhead athletes
If the ultrasound shows something that needs a specialist, a large tear, a stubborn calcification, we tell you straight away and point you to the right route in the Dutch system.

When should you see a GP first?
- A clearly deformed shoulder or inability to move the arm at all after a fall (possible fracture or dislocation)
- Sudden complete loss of strength after trauma
- A hot, red, swollen shoulder with fever
- Shoulder pain with chest pressure or shortness of breath: call emergency services
Outside these situations, physiotherapy is the right first step, and we screen for red flags in every intake.
