What is jaw physiotherapy (tmj)?
Jaw complaints (TMJ dysfunction or TMD) show up as pain around the jaw or ear, a clicking jaw, difficulty opening the mouth, or headaches from clenching and grinding. Stress is a common driver, which is why we see these complaints often in busy professionals. Treatment combines gentle hands-on techniques for the jaw and neck, relaxation exercises and habit training.
Who is it for?
- Pain in the jaw, face or around the ear
- A clicking or locking jaw when eating or yawning
- Teeth grinding and clenching, at night or at work
- Headaches combined with jaw and neck tension

For which complaints do we use jaw physiotherapy (tmj)?
Jaw pain & ear pain
- Pain in front of the ear with a healthy ear.
- Pain along the jawline or in the cheek.
- Chewing tough food hurts.
Clenching & grinding
- Waking up with a tired, tense jaw.
- A partner or dentist noticed grinding.
- Clenching while concentrating at work.
Clicking & locking
- A click when opening wide or yawning.
- A jaw that occasionally locks.
- Limited mouth opening.
Headaches from the jaw
- Temple headaches after focused work.
- Tension-type headaches with jaw and neck tension.
- Face tension that builds during the day.

When to book jaw physiotherapy (tmj)?
Wondering whether it is 'bad enough' for the physio? In these situations an appointment is worthwhile, no referral needed:
- Jaw or ear pain without an ear cause: the GP found a healthy ear, the jaw joint is the likely source.
- Morning jaw fatigue: waking with a tense, tired jaw points to night-time clenching or grinding.
- A jaw that clicks painfully or locks: mobilisation and coordination training restore smooth movement.
- Headaches with jaw tension: treating jaw and neck together often reduces them clearly.
How TMJ treatment works
We start with a short intake about your complaints and goals, in plain English. We look at your load and recovery (work, sport, sleep, stress), test which movements provoke your complaint, and decide together whether this treatment adds value for you. You get a clear explanation and a concrete plan for the first weeks, and treatment starts the same appointment.
Stress, clenching and grinding
TMJ complaints are strongly linked to stress. Concentrated screen work, deadlines and disturbed sleep all increase unconscious clenching, which overloads the chewing muscles, some of the strongest muscles in your body.
That is why treatment goes beyond the jaw itself: we address neck tension, breathing and work habits. Where useful we coordinate with your dentist, for example about a night guard.
What results can you expect?
TMD is one of the more grateful complaints in physiotherapy: muscle-driven jaw pain typically improves clearly within three to five sessions, and morning jaw fatigue often fades once the clenching habit is caught.
A painless click may remain, that is harmless, but pain, tension, limited opening and the related headaches respond well. Combined jaw-and-neck treatment, standard in our approach, shows the best results in research.

Costs and insurance
Physiotherapy is covered by your supplementary (aanvullende) insurance, depending on your policy, and it never touches your deductible (eigen risico). Many expat and international insurance plans cover physiotherapy as well. Bring your insurance details to the first appointment and we check your coverage together, before any costs surprise you. No referral from a dentist or GP is needed, though we happily coordinate with your dentist when a night guard could support the result.
Adults (18+)
- Sessions are reimbursed from your supplementary (aanvullende) insurance, the number depends on your policy.
- For chronic conditions on the official list, the basic insurance covers from session 21 onwards (sessions 1–20 via supplementary insurance or self-paid); a doctor's referral is required for chronic status.
- Physiotherapy never counts towards your deductible (eigen risico), except basic-insurance COPD care.
Children up to 17
- With a chronic indication, physiotherapy is covered from the very first session by the basic insurance.
Preparation and aftercare
What to bring
- ID (first appointment) and your insurance details
- Clothes you can move in, think shorts or sports gear for hip and knee complaints
- A short history of your complaint: when it started, what worsens it, what eases it
- Any medical information: referral letter, scans or earlier reports, if you have them
- No special preparation needed, a water bottle is always a good idea
After the treatment
- The chewing muscles can feel treated for a day, warmth on the cheek helps
- Practise the check during work: lips together, teeth apart, tongue relaxed
- Temporarily avoid extreme chewing: tough steak, whole apples, gum
- Do not test the click repeatedly, that irritates the joint
