What is copd physiotherapy?

With COPD, staying active is one of the most effective things you can do, but it can feel daunting. Our specialised therapists guide you with breathing techniques, mucus clearance and a personal training programme that safely builds your stamina and muscle strength. We monitor your oxygen saturation during every session and adjust the programme to your day-to-day condition.

Who is it for?

  • People recently diagnosed with COPD who want to stay fit
  • Breathlessness that limits walking, stairs or daily tasks
  • Recovery after a COPD flare-up (exacerbation)
  • Anyone who wants supervised, safe exercise with a lung condition

For which complaints do we use copd physiotherapy?

Breathlessness in daily life

  • Stairs, shopping and walking cost more and more breath.
  • Fear of exertion keeps you at home.
  • Energy runs out halfway through the day.

After a flare-up

  • Rebuilding after an exacerbation or hospital stay.
  • Muscle loss after weeks of low activity.
  • Preventing the next flare-up.

Mucus & coughing

  • Mucus that is hard to clear.
  • Coughing fits that exhaust you.
  • Learning effective huffing techniques.

Staying fit with a lung condition

  • Also for asthma and other lung conditions.
  • Building stamina and strength within your limits.
  • Coordination with your pulmonologist.

When to book copd physiotherapy?

Wondering whether it is 'bad enough' for the physio? In these situations an appointment is worthwhile, no referral needed:

  • A recent COPD diagnosis: starting training early keeps you ahead of the decline curve.
  • Increasing breathlessness: daily activities cost noticeably more breath than a year ago.
  • After an exacerbation: guided rebuilding is proven to speed recovery and reduce the next flare-up risk.
  • Fear of exertion: you avoid activity out of worry, supervised training with saturation monitoring rebuilds trust.

Your COPD programme

We start with a short intake about your complaints and goals, in plain English. We look at your load and recovery (work, sport, sleep, stress), test which movements provoke your complaint, and decide together whether this treatment adds value for you. You get a clear explanation and a concrete plan for the first weeks, and treatment starts the same appointment.

Covered by Dutch basic insurance

Unlike most physiotherapy, COPD treatment is covered by the Dutch basic insurance (basisverzekering) under certain conditions, depending on the severity of your COPD (GOLD classification).

That means long-term guidance is affordable for most patients. We check what applies to your situation during the intake, in plain English, and handle the administration with your insurer.

What training with COPD achieves

Pulmonary rehabilitation is one of the best-proven treatments in all of COPD care: research shows better exercise capacity, less breathlessness in daily life, fewer hospital admissions and higher quality of life. The lungs do not regrow, but the body around them becomes far more efficient.

Our patients typically walk further at the six-minute test within weeks, and, at least as valuable, dare to do more: stairs, shopping, travel. The saturation meter proves session by session that activity is safe, which breaks the fear-breathlessness spiral.

Costs and insurance

COPD physiotherapy is covered by the basic insurance (basisverzekering) under conditions set by your GOLD classification, unlike most physiotherapy. Your deductible (eigen risico) may apply here. We check your exact coverage during the intake and handle the paperwork with your insurer.

Adults (18+)

  • Sessions are reimbursed from your supplementary (aanvullende) insurance, the number depends on your policy.
  • For chronic conditions on the official list, the basic insurance covers from session 21 onwards (sessions 1–20 via supplementary insurance or self-paid); a doctor's referral is required for chronic status.
  • Physiotherapy never counts towards your deductible (eigen risico), except basic-insurance COPD care.

Children up to 17

  • With a chronic indication, physiotherapy is covered from the very first session by the basic insurance.

Preparation and aftercare

What to bring

  • ID (first appointment) and your insurance details
  • Clothes you can move in, think shorts or sports gear for hip and knee complaints
  • A short history of your complaint: when it started, what worsens it, what eases it
  • Any medical information: referral letter, scans or earlier reports, if you have them
  • No special preparation needed, a water bottle is always a good idea

After the treatment

  • Tiredness after training is normal, plan a quieter hour afterwards
  • Use the breathing techniques during daily peaks: stairs, showering, carrying
  • Keep the home walking schedule between sessions
  • Report increased breathlessness, mucus changes or fever early, catching a flare-up early matters
